“You are my beloved Son”
Luke 3:15-16.21-22
John says: “Do you want to know the face and heart of God? Then listen to the words of Jesus and consider what he did for you.”
But how does Jesus communicate God? By standing in line with sinners, by being baptized like them, that is, by descending into the abyss of each one’s personal evil in order to be close to everyone and lead them beyond the power of darkness. Jesus tells us about a God who accompanies people to the very end; a God who, in order to reach every last person and reassure them, embraces the Cross to save his lost loved one, the evildoer.
My limitations thus make it possible for the heavens to literally burst open above me, allowing God to reach me with his very life, which is Love, the Holy Spirit. When that happens, a true re-creation will initiate within me, symbolized by a dove, an image of the one that flew over the earth after the original flood, the sign of peace restored forever. And finally, my poverty will give our merciful God the chance to proclaim the most beautiful words that Love can say to a human being: “You are my beloved child.”
