On 1 May 2024, the Daughters of St Paul, affectionately nicknamed the “media nuns”, celebrated three decades of their presence in Singapore with a solemn Mass and a warm celebration lunch at the Church of St Francis Xavier, in Serangoon.
The Mass, presided over by Friar Derrick Yap OFM and concelebrated by 12 other priests from different religious orders, attracted over 300 participants including clergy and lay people. Among them were the Paulines of Petaling Jaya Selangor, the Pauline Cooperators, generous benefactors, devoted collaborators and dear friends.
In 1994, their presence in Singapore began modestly, they were welcomed by the then-Archbishop Gregory Yong. This foundation was begun by Sr. Lorenzina Nota, an Italian Sister, together with Sr. Mary Grace Lee, born in Singapore, and Sr. Agostina Hiromoto, a Japanese sister. They initially found hospitality with the Sisters of the Child Jesus in Jurong West, a bond that lasted 27 years. Through the goodness of the Lord and the support of the Congregation, a permanent house was built in Lorong Chuan, Serangoon in 2021 after considerable fundraising. During the homily, Friar Derrick reminded those present that «the Paulines have become indispensable pillars of support for the Catholic community, nourishing faith and embodying the light of Christ in their service. Embracing technological advances, they continually explore new media avenues, promoting dialogue and cultural development, relevant in the digital age in order to reach a wider audience.”
The local community heartily thanks all those who have supported the mission over the last thirty years, including the sisters from Italy, India, Japan and the Philippines. Looking to the future, they pray for the continued development of the apostolate, trusting that their commitment will continue to touch hearts and transform lives for years to come.
